Analysis of Plasma Cholesterol Regarding Ion Suppression in LC-MS
Free cholesterol in plasma is highly lipophilic and, similar to phospholipids, is known to cause ion suppression in LC-MS analysis of drugs.
To evaluate matrix effects, ion suppression of cholesterol was examined using post-column infusion of several drugs.
It was found that protein removal using organic solvents yielded the highest recovery rates for free cholesterol in plasma.
