LC-QTOF/MS Analysis of Acylcarnitines

We developed a method for quantifying acylcarnitines in infant foods, follow-up formulas, and raw materials by hydrolyzing them to L-carnitine with an alkaline solution, followed by analysis using a multi-mode ODS column, Scherzo SS-C18, and LC-MS.

The Scherzo SS-C18 column was capable of analyzing not only carnitine but also acylcarnitines using LC-QTOF/MS. Carnitine is a highly polar compound with zwitterionic properties, making it difficult to retain on conventional ODS columns. Scherzo SS-C18 is designed to easily retain and separate such zwitterionic compounds, and this feature was demonstrated in our study.
