Analysis of Organic Fluorine Compounds (PFCs) in Seawater by LC-MS/MS
Contamination of seawater by organic fluorine compounds (PFCs) such as PFOS and PFOA is a global concern. The Kobe City Environmental Health Center has been continuously measuring the concentration of PFCs in the seawater of Osaka Bay using the LC-MS/MS method and reporting their distribution and trends.
Seawater samples were spiked with surrogates, subjected to solid-phase extraction for PFCs, and measured by LC-MS/MS (ESI, SRM). As a result, 17 types of PFCs were observed in seawater in the range of less than 1 ppt to 530 ppt.
The LC-MS/MS method using the reversed-phase column Unison UK-C18 is effectively utilized for the investigation of PFCs in seawater.
